Sennybridge Miners Banners

Education and Outreach

Heritage is not only preserved but actively shaped by those who live in the community today.

Education and outreach were at the heart of this project’s mission to foster dialogue and participation across generations.

Local artists and facilitators led hands-on workshops with local schools and youth clubs: Brotawe, Golwyg Y Cwm and Sennybridge, as well as Rhos Youth club and The Boys and Girls Youth club, where young people explored digital storytelling, oral history recording techniques, and the visual language of protest through activities like banner-making and interview-based filmmaking.

Working with youth clubs and older residents, participants learnt to document personal memories of coal mining, strike action, and community life, building skills in creative practice, interviewing, and archival work.

Themes explored by the young people included, but were not limited to: LGBTQ+ due to the Lesbian and Gays Support the Miners  – LGSM connection , Environment – coal connection, Children’s Rights, Animal Welfare, Palestine, Ukraine and other conflicts.

These sessions encouraged collaboration and mutual learning, ensuring that heritage is not only preserved but actively shaped by those who live in the community today. The stories gathered fed into a digital archive, enhancing educational resources and offered a dynamic platform for ongoing engagement with local history.
